The Bishop of Buea, His Lordship Michael Miabesue Bibi, has described the opening of the first-ever Diocesan Synod of Buea as a historic moment in the life of the Diocese.
Welcoming delegates from parishes, religious congregations, institutions, and services across the Diocese, Bishop Bibi noted that after 75 years of existence, it was necessary for the Diocese to come together and reflect on the question: What kind of Diocese of Buea do we desire for the next 75 years?
The Bishop emphasized that a synod is not a parliament where people vote on issues, but rather a gathering for discernment. “We are here to listen to one another and, above all, to listen to the Holy Spirit who speaks through us,” he said.

Describing the Holy Spirit as the principal protagonist of the Synod, Bishop Bibi reminded delegates that genuine listening requires simplicity, humility, and the willingness to let go of personal agendas. He encouraged them to speak honestly and respectfully during the deliberations while remaining open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
The prelate stated that the Synod would be guided by the principles of participation, communion, and mission.
Reflecting on St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans (12:3-13), Bishop Bibi noted that although Christians possess different gifts and talents, they are members of one body in Christ. He said the Synod offers an opportunity for everyone to place their gifts and talents at the service of the Church and urged delegates to create room for each person to contribute meaningfully.

Drawing from the Gospel of John (17:20-23), where Christ prayed that His disciples may be perfectly one, the Bishop reminded the faithful that unity remains the strength of the Church.
“Our unity does not mean that we do not have different ideas. Rather, it means that we listen to one another and exchange ideas in a manner that promotes growth and strengthens the Church,” he said.
Bishop Bibi concluded by praying that God may send the Holy Spirit to inspire, guide, and accompany all delegates throughout the Synod
