Priests, religious, and delegates from all parishes, institutions, commissions, movements, and services of the Diocese of Buea have gathered in Buea for the first-ever Diocesan Synod, taking place from June 14–19, 2026.
Coming shortly after the celebration of the Diocese’s 75th Anniversary, the Synod provides a unique opportunity for the People of God to reflect on the journey so far and discern the way forward for the local Church.
The opening Mass of this historic gathering is being presided over by the Bishop of Buea, His Lordship Bishop Michael Bibi, at the Chapel of the Bishop Pius Awa Memorial Pastoral Centre, Buea.

In his opening remarks, Bishop Bibi called on the Holy Spirit to guide the delegates in their deliberations throughout the Synod and invoked the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary as they embark on this journey of discernment and renewal.
The Synod has brought together more than 240 delegates from across the Diocese. Held under the theme, “Journeying Together in Faith: Building the Church We Desire After 75 Years,” the gathering seeks to reflect on the Diocese’s rich history, assess present realities, and chart a path forward for the future mission of the Church in Buea.

According to the Code of Canon Law (Canon 460), a diocesan synod is a gathering of selected priests, religious, and lay faithful who assist the diocesan bishop in discerning matters concerning the life and mission of the local Church. More than a meeting or parliament, a synod is a spiritual exercise of prayer, listening, dialogue, and discernment under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Through this historic Synod, the Diocese of Buea seeks to reflect on its 75-year journey of faith and chart a renewed path for the future of evangelization, communion, and mission.
Let us continue to keep the Synod and all its participants in our prayers as they seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit in this important moment in the life of our Diocese.
