“Gone but not forgotten”, was the focus of the Homily delivered by Archbishop Andrew Nkea, of the Archdiocese of Bamenda on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of death of Bishop Pius Suh Awa, Bishop emeritus of the Diocese of Buea.
Communing with the late prelate, all bishops of the Bamenda Ecclesiastical Province, Priests, Religious, Christ lay faithful, family and friends, convened as one family to remember the legacies of Bishop Pius Suh Awa and to pray for the eternal rest of his soul in God’s heavenly kingdom.
The legacy of Bishop Pius Awa; 3rd residential bishop of the oldest diocese in Cameroon, was highlighted by the prelate Andrew Nkea as he officiated the Eucharistic celebration in his honor on Saturday the 9th of March 2024, at the Divine Mercy Co-cathedral in Molyko- Buea. The late prelate according to Bishop Nkea, was unpopular in his time because his works were too great for little minds to see ten years ago. While he was criticized by some, the great teacher spent time building the church in the diocese of Buea without fear, favour or compromise and made the diocese a home to all Christ faithful.
Consecrated Bishop in 1971, Bishop Pius Suh Awa amongst other achievements, is remembered for his incredible mark in translating the gospel into Pidgin English and for impacting the lives of many in different ways.
Celebrating the emeritus Bishop Pius Awa, Archbishop Andrew Nkea accorded gratitude to the sitting bishop of the diocese of Buea His Lordship Michael Bibi for immortalizing the late prelate through the establishment of the magnificent Pastoral Centre; Bishop Pius Awa Memorial Pastoral Centre- the best so far in the country. While noting that the late prelate closed his ears to vain noises during his reign, Archbishop Nkea encouraged Bishop Michael Bibi to continue his good works for the Diocese of Buea “Bishop Bibi, God will bless you and reward you for all you do in this historic Diocese. This celebration should be a source of encouragement to you. Continue the good works and close your ears to vain noises” Bishop Andrew Nkea noted.
After the Eucharistic celebration, all five bishops of the Bamenda Ecclesiastical Province , moved to the Bishop Pius Awa Memorial Pastoral Centre where they inaugurated the Centre by cutting the ribbon and blessing the structure.
The two day event it should be noted, commenced on the 8th of March with the lighting of candles, the blessing of the tomb of the late prelate at the Regina Pacis Cathedral Small Soppo , and the office of the dead.
The event was graced with traditional dances, band displays amongst other animations in remembrance of the late emeritus Bishop.
