Fifth Day of Pope Leo XIV in Africa
Cameroon Stage – Douala/Yaoundé, 17 April 2026
Uniting Heart and Intelligence, Sharing and Truth
On this third day of his Apostolic visit to the country cameroon, the most holy father pope LeoXIV is welcomed at the economic capital and ArchDioecese of Douala.
At Japoma Stadium in Douala, thousands of faithful welcomed the Holy Father in an atmosphere of prayer and hope. Guided by the Gospel of the multiplication of the loaves, the Pope posed a simple yet challenging question: “Behold this hungry crowd… what are you going to do?” This interpellation echoed through the assembly as a personal call. He strongly reminded the faithful that “the multiplication of the loaves and fishes happens in sharing: that is the miracle!”, insisting on the Gospel truth: “There is enough bread for all if it is shared by all.”

At the heart of his message lies a profound conviction: humanity is hungry not only for bread, but also for meaning, justice, and peace. “To the food that nourishes the body, we must add the food of the soul,” he said, pointing to Christ in the Eucharist as the source of strength and hope on life’s often difficult paths.

He then turned to young people with words both demanding and encouraging: “Do not yield to mistrust… be the builders of the future.” A call to reject violence, shortcuts, and discouragement, and to become artisans of justice, peace, and faith.
But the day did not end with words. At Saint Paul Hospital in Nylon, the Pope made silent yet powerful gestures: blessings, attentive looks, and words of comfort. At the bedside of the sick, the Gospel became closeness and compassion.

A few hours later, the setting shifted to Yaoundé. At the Catholic University of Central Africa, the tone became more reflective without losing intensity. Addressing professors and students, the Holy Father called the university to be “a beacon at the service of the Church and of Africa.” In a world marked by “the loss of moral and spiritual bearings,” he stressed the urgent need for “the shared search for truth,” recalling that “no society can thrive if it is not founded on upright consciences.”
Addressing the challenges of the digital age and artificial intelligence, he warned against a subtle but profound drift: “the progressive replacement of reality by its simulation.” A warning that calls for remaining anchored in reality, human relationships, and truth.
To students, he gave a clear invitation: not to flee, but to serve—placing their knowledge at the service of their country. To teachers, he recalled their responsibility: to be models of integrity in a context where “Africa needs to be freed from the scourge of corruption.”

From Japoma Stadium to the UCAC auditorium, a single line emerges: Pope Leo XIV calls for the unity of heart and intelligence, sharing and truth. To act, but also to understand. To give, but also to form. A dense and coherent day, where faith became gesture, word, and vision.
