Members of the Provincial Episcopal Commission for Social Affairs, PECSA, of the Bamenda Ecclesiastical Province, BAPEC, have met to evaluate the social services offered by the Church in the Bamenda Ecclesiastical Province as they strive to “put flesh in the gospel”, in the words of Bishop Agapitus Nfon, President of the Commission.
The meeting ran from Wednesday, July 9 to Thursday, July 10, 2025 at the Justice and Peace Building in the Archdiocese of Bamenda. The Bishop of Kumba, who chairs this commission, urged members to be guided by faith to care for and bring hope to people in need with humility, compassion and respect.
Following the reports presented by the three sub commissions that make up PECSA: Caritas, Social Communication and Justice and Peace, members brainstormed on new ways that can be used to answer the social questions of the people in our dioceses and to alleviate their sufferings as much as possible.
Bishop Agapitus reminded members of the Social Affairs Commission of their important role in carrying out the church’s mission, which encompasses both spiritual and social aspects, requiring a holistic approach that addresses both the gospel message and the practical needs of the community. While the core message of the gospel remains central, the church must actively engage with social issues like poverty, injustice, and inequality, demonstrating Christ’s love through tangible actions.
The meeting ended with a word of appreciation and farewell addressed to some members of PECSA who are leaving the commission. They include: Rev. Sr. Akongnwi Ayumbi Ndeng, Head of the Justice and Peace Sub Commission, Rev. Fr. Nelson Nkeze and Fr. Solomon Lyonga Ikundi, members of the Communication Sub Commission, who have received new assignments.
