“The proclamation of the good news is the primary responsibility of the church which is mother and teacher and which ensures that the content of the church’s teaching is preserved”. Bishop Michael Bibi spelled this out as the core of the Teaching office of the Church during his Monday catechetical session of 24th June, 2024 which took place at St. Martin De Porres parish in Bokwango.
Focusing on the teaching office of the church, the local ordinary of the Diocese of Buea, highlighted that the mission of the church is to guard the deposit of the faith and in doing so, it uses different possible media platforms in the teaching and proclamation of the Faith.
The prelate made it clear to attendees that no one has the right to force anyone to become a catholic, rather they should teach about the catholic faith and anyone who wants to belong to the catholic church should do so as a free will “ The catholic Church does not need bill boards and posters to attract people to come to church. Never Force anyone to come to the catholic Church” Bishop Bibi told Christians.
In teaching the faith, the Prelate noted that the magisterium is the teaching authority of the church and the pope and bishops constitute the magisterium. He further noted that the magisterium guides the church as far as faith and morals are concerned.
Moving further Bishop Michael Bibi said that the catholic church makes use of three different sources in carrying out the deposit of the faith and these sources are used collectively. These are the sacred traditions, the sacred scriptures and the magisterium. In carrying out her mission as teacher , the church he noted must hand over the entire faith and respect the law of fidelity.
He also reminded Christians that as Christians, they are charged with the duty of believing in the teachings of the church and to put it into practice.
The session also gave room for participants to ask Christian related questions which help them build up their faith .
It should be noted that the chief catechist of the diocese of Buea Bishop Michael Bibi, carries out this routine teachings every Monday at 10.30 am in different scheduled parishes.
