Philip Giyo Nsami, President of the Molyko Deanery Choirs’ Association talked about the need to promote discipline, a spirit of prayer, unity and love among the parish choirs in Saint Cornelius parish, Bonduma, urging them to avoid all traces of divisiveness and negative competition.
Other speakers, including the Parish Priest of Saint Cornelius Parish, Bonduma, reminded the choristers that theirs is a vocation: the choir sings the Mass just as the priest celebrates the Mass. Choristers have an important role at Mass, leading others to pray and it only happens when the choir members themselves get into the logic of prayer.
The Dean of Molyko Deanery, Rev. Fr. Frank Bayong invited the choristers of the four choirs that make up Bonduma parish to work as a family and also collaborate with choristers of the other four parishes that make up Molyko deanery. The Father dean also encouraged the choirs to use their talents and voices for the glory of God, to proclaim the gospel through sacred music, in line with the theme of the 75th anniversary of the Diocese of Buea.
61 years after the closing of the Second Vatican Council (1962-65), which opened the doors of the Church, making it clear that everyone has a place in the Church and all are important, we must admit that the role of the choir, which is vital and essential in our Sunday liturgies, is still misunderstood, sometimes by the choristers themselves and especially by those who are responsible for the preparation and celebration of the Mass. There is need for the continuous formation of choristers and the humility to learn.
