Cameroon Bishops Express Concerns About Growing Poverty Atrocities in North West and South West Regions
In a final communique issued on January 13th, 2024, the Bishops of Cameroon expressed deep concerns about the increasing poverty among the population, among other issues. The communique followed the closing of the 47th annual seminar of Bishops of Cameroon, held from January 6th to 13th, 2024, in the city of Maroua, focusing on the theme ‘A Synodal Church on Mission.’
The Bishops denounced the horrendous acts committed by the Boko Haram sect in the Far North region and expressed deep concerns for the victims. Simultaneously, they condemned atrocities in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon, offering constant paternal solicitude and continued prayers for all affected.
The Bishops welcomed His Grace Jose Alevino BATTENCOURT, the new Apostolic Nuncio to Cameroon, during the seminar.
In his opening address, the President of the National Episcopal Conference praised the hospitality and dynamism of the faithful in the Diocese of Maroua-Mokolo and their Bishop, who has given the Diocese a new facelift through a missionary drive exemplified in the construction of the magnificent Cathedral of Our Lady of Assumption.
A highlight of the seminar was the pilgrimage to the footsteps of Tokombere along the footsteps of venerable Baba Simon.
The Bishops expressed gratitude to their host, His Lordship Bishop Bruno Ateba Edo, his presbyterium, all the religious communities, and lay faithful for the hospitality, warm welcome, and excellent organization that facilitated the smooth functioning of the seminar.
The next Annual seminar of the Bishops of Cameroon will take place in the Diocese of Buea from January 4th to 11th, 2025
