Chief Shepherd of Buea Exhorts Catholics to Guard Against Schism and Return to Church Communion

On July 6, 2026, the Chief Shepherd of the Diocese of Buea, Bishop Michael Miabesue Bibi, led a catechetical session at Saint Charles Lwanga Parish, Molyko, on the theme “Schisms, Heresy, and Apostasy in the Church.” The timely teaching addressed the dangers of division and called the faithful back to communion with Christ and His Church.

Bishop Bibi during catechesis

Anchoring his catechesis on the unchanging foundations of the Catholic faith, Bishop Bibi explained the Church’s doctrine on papal infallibility. He reminded the faithful that when the Pope speaks _ex cathedra_ on matters of faith and morals, he does not err, for he is preserved from error by the Holy Spirit. The Bishop therefore urged all Catholics to stand firm in faith and discipline, and to obey the teachings and laws of the Church with love and docility.

The prelate further distinguished the two forms of tradition that guide the Church. He explained that ecclesial tradition consists of customs, practices, and disciplines that may adapt over time for the good of souls, while Apostolic tradition holds the revealed truths handed down from the Apostles that can never change. On this basis, he challenged both the laity and religious to remain in full communion with the Church and with the Supreme Pontiff, warning that schism and heresy inflict grave wounds on the Body of Christ.

With pastoral clarity, Bishop Bibi also charted a path for healing. He cautioned against disobedience and the threats it poses to ecclesial communion and the integrity of Church belief, while showing how the faithful can guard against division. For those who have strayed, he pointed to the Church’s ever-waiting arms of reconciliation.

Christians during catechesis

Concluding with a message of mercy, the Bishop exhorted the faithful to pray constantly for those who have been excommunicated. He asked God to touch their hearts, grant them true repentance, and draw them back to the unity of Mother Church. His words served as a timely invitation for all Catholics of the Diocese of Buea to embrace unity, truth, and the healing love of Christ and His Church.
