His Lordship Bishop Michael Bibi, Bishop of the Diocese of Buea, presided over a Pontifical Holy Mass at Saint Martin de Porres Parish, Bokwango, to mark the great solemnity. The celebration brought the faithful together to reflect on the mystery of Mary’s Assumption, deepen their Marian devotion, and rejoice in the Church’s teaching that Mary shares in the glory of her Son, Jesus Christ. The mystery of the Assumption refers to the Church’s belief that, at the end of her earthly life, Mary was taken body and soul into heaven.

In his homily, the Chief Shepherd of the Diocese presented the Blessed Virgin Mary as a profound model of Christian faith. He reiterated that Mary’s unwavering belief, obedience, and complete submission to the will of God provided a roadmap for all Christians to follow in their own journey of faith. Drawing from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, CCC 966, Bishop Bibi recalled that by a singular grace of God, Mary was preserved from original sin and, at the end of her earthly life, was taken body and soul into heavenly glory. He explained that Mary’s glorification in the Assumption is also an anticipation of the resurrection and the hope of eternal life promised to all who remain faithful to God in their words, thoughts, and actions, and who act as witnesses of the faith.

The Chief Shepherd further called on the faithful to examine their lives and strive to emulate the virtues of the Blessed Virgin Mary, especially her faith, devotion, obedience, and love for Christ. He urged Christians to cooperate fully with God’s grace and remain faithful to His will, so that they might one day share in the eternal blessings of the Kingdom of Heaven. He emphasized that only through total submission and obedience could they inherit God’s glorious kingdom.
