The official opening Mass marking the beginning of the four-day annual meeting between the seminarians of the Diocese of Buea and their Bishop, Bishop Michael Bibi, was celebrated at the Bishop Pius Awa Memorial Pastoral Centre on Sunday, 12 July 2026.

Rev Jervis during homily
The gathering, which runs from 12 to 16 July 2026, brings together seminarians from the Diocese of Buea and their bishop for spiritual formation, fraternity, dialogue, and pastoral guidance. Such meetings reflect the Church’s emphasis on the bishop’s responsibility to know, accompany, and provide ongoing pastoral care for those preparing for the priesthood, fostering communion between the diocesan shepherd and his future priests.

Seminarians in church
In his homily during the Holy Mass, which was presided over by Bishop Michael Bibi, Deacon Jervis Asongefac challenged his fellow seminarians to give up everything and follow Christ wholeheartedly.

Seminarians in the Pastoral Year
Reflecting on the theme of discipleship, Deacon Asongefac asked, “How do we become worthy disciples and worthy followers of Christ?” He reminded the seminarians that one defining characteristic shared by all the Apostles was their willingness to leave everything behind to follow Jesus.

He urged his brothers to detach themselves from worldly attachments, embrace daily sacrifices and persecution, and never be afraid to be slandered for the sake of Christ and the Gospel.

The deacon further challenged the seminarians to examine their lives by asking whether they truly carry their cross each day to follow Christ or whether they allow themselves to be distracted by the things of the world.

He concluded by encouraging them to reflect on everything that shapes them into authentic pastors after the heart of Christ and prayed that God would grant them the grace to surrender everything for the sake of His Kingdom.
