Understanding the lenten season, Bishop Bibi leads Catechetical Session

Date: February 17, 2026/Speaker: BISHOP MICHAEL BIBI

As the lenten season approaches beginning on Ash Wednesday February 18th, Bishop Michael Bibi led a timely catechetical session on “Understanding the Lenten Season” at Saint Anthony of Padua Parish Buea Town today February 16th, 2026. The session aimed to equip Christians with a deeper understanding of how to prepare themselves for the Lenten season.

During the session, the prelate emphasized that Lent is a journey with Christ in his passion. “At Lent, Christians journey in the passion of Christ, and as such, the faithful ought to prepare themselves spiritually to journey with Christ in his passion,” he said. This perspective highlights the importance of spiritual preparation and introspection during this period.

Bishop Bibi also noted that temptation is an inherent part of Christian life, just as Christ was tempted. He urged the faithful to be steadfast and resist temptations, emphasizing the need for spiritual resilience. By doing so, Christians can deepen their faith and emerge stronger in their walk with Christ.

The prelate challenged Christians to anchor themselves on the three pillars of Lent: prayer, fasting, and alms giving. By embracing these spiritual disciplines, Christians can strengthen their relationship with Christ and cultivate a deeper sense of devotion. “By hanging on these pillars, Christians will deepen their relationship with Christ,” he said.

The session also highlighted some distinctive Lenten practices, including the absence of the Gloria and Alleluia during Lent, and the limitation of altar decorations. These practices serve as reminders of the solemn nature of the season, calling Christians to a period of reflection, repentance, and renewal.
