In a vibrant annual Thanksgiving Mass for the entire education family in the Diocese of Buea, held on August 27, 2024, at the Divine Mercy Co-Cathedral in Molyko, Buea, His Lordship Michael Bibi, Chief Shepherd of the Diocese and employer, affirmed the sacred nature of the teaching profession, recognizing teachers as transmitters of knowledge.
This year’s Thanksgiving Mass coincided with the 75th anniversary of the Diocese of Buea, and teachers from nursery, primary, secondary, high schools, and CUIB attended the event, adorned in their anniversary fabric, adding a unique pomp and color to the occasion.
In his homily, Bishop Michael Bibi expressed gratitude to the teachers for their sacrifices during the last academic year. He emphasized that this annual gathering symbolizes communion between him and the education family. “It is important today that we celebrate teachers who have been the bedrock of education in the Diocese and to thank God for giving them the strength to continue training the children in their care,” he said. He also urged everyone to be true agents of unity in their respective institutions.
Bishop Bibi highlighted that education is the most powerful arm of evangelization, stating, “If you want to change people, you do so through schools.” He praised the significant impact of Catholic schools in society, encouraging teachers to continue their quest to train pupils and students who will positively impact society through holistic Catholic education. Drawing inspiration from the theme of the anniversary, the Bishop assured the teachers that Christ would be with them as they faithfully execute their duties in various institutions. “By teaching the children under your care, you are proclaiming the Good News of God,” he affirmed, acknowledging the irreplaceable role teachers play in the Diocese.
Reflecting on the Gospel of Matthew 23:23-26, Bishop Bibi reminded the nearly 700 teachers present that they must strive to be true and authentic educators. “Not everyone can be a teacher; if you find yourself as a teacher, make it a vocation,” he urged. He emphasized that a holy teacher will produce holy students, and a hardworking teacher will produce hardworking students, noting that students reflect their teachers.
During his intervention, Catholic Education Secretary Rev. Fr. Vincent Mesue expressed gratitude to the Bishop and the teachers for their contributions to the growth of Catholic schools, as evidenced by the excellent results in the year-end exams across various institutions.
Staff Representative Mr. Willbroad Sakwe also thanked the Bishop for his efforts to improve the working environment, particularly the recent salary increase for teachers.
The Mass was attended by about 700 teachers from the three deaneries, along with school managers, principals, and other administrators. During this event, some schools and individual teachers who performed exceptionally were recognized
