On May 7th, 2025 , thousands of Christians from across the Diocese of Buea, joined by guests from across Cameroon and abroad, gathered at the magnificent 6,000-capacity Divine Mercy Cathedral to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Diocese—the oldest in Cameroon.
The celebration marked the grand finale of a year-long journey that saw Christians commemorate this milestone in various deaneries and through diverse Christian groups across the Diocese.

The high Mass was presided over by the Apostolic Nuncio to Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea Archbishop José Avelino Bettencourt , in the presence of nearly a dozen Archbishops and Bishops, as well as the Governor of the South West Region, other civil dignitaries, and traditional authorities. In his homily, the Apostolic Nuncio encouraged the faithful to continue living in love and unity as they grow deeper in their faith.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Bishop of the Diocese of Buea, His Lordship Michael Bibi, congratulated the Christians for their unwavering sacrifices and commitment over the decades. He went on to recount the rich and inspiring history of the Diocese, emphasizing its pivotal role in the life of the local Church in Cameroon. The Bishop also disclosed that during a meeting with the Nuncio, the priests of the Diocese had requested that Buea be elevated to the status of an Archdiocese,a move that reflects the Diocese’s importance and maturity.
On behalf of the Christian faithful, Mr. James Vefonge, Chairperson of the Diocesan Pastoral Council, warmly welcomed all the guests and expressed pride in belonging to such a historic and vibrant Diocese.
