On February 18, 2025, Bishop Michael Bibi, along with both senior and younger priests of the Diocese of Buea, conducted a visit to Bakingili. The main purpose of the visit was to assess a proposed piece of diocesan land earmarked for the construction of a retirement home for priests in the diocese. The group toured the proposed site located near St. Andrew Catholic Church in Bakingili.

Following the site visit, the priests gathered at the Idenau Council Community Hall in Bakingili for further deliberation. The priests appreciated the site’s location, highlighting the pleasant sea breeze that would contribute to a comfortable living environment.
However, they expressed concerns regarding the potential isolation of the site, which could affect the residents’ social engagement and overall well-being. Ensuring safety for elderly priests was deemed a critical factor and access to nearby health facilities was identified as essential for addressing the medical needs of retirees.
Bishop Bibi encouraged the clergy to carefully consider these concerns in any decisions regarding the retirement home. He reiterated that while they discus on the retirement home, the plan is to establish multiple retirement homes across the Diocese as needs arise.

Mr. Avic Anye, the Diocesan contractor, was tasked with exploring alternative land options. Proposals included: a land parcel near Divine Mercy Co-Cathedral and a location surrounding Mount Mary Hospital among other diocesan lands. These alternatives will also take into account the concerns raised by the priests during their discussions.
The visit to Bakingili served as a vital step in the planning process for a retirement home for priests in the Diocese of Buea. The dialogue among the clergy, prompted by Bishop Bibi’s leadership, underscored the importance of creating a suitable and supportive environment for the elderly members of the priesthood while ensuring that their health, safety, and accessibility are prioritized. Further evaluations of alternative locations will aid in making an informed decision that meets the needs of the retired priests.
