On January 27th, 2025, members of the Presbyteral Council of the Diocese of Buea convened at the conference room of the Bishop Pius Awa Memorial Pastoral Center in Molyko, Buea. This gathering, a consultative and advisory body comprising priests selected by the Bishop, was held within the context of the Diocesan Economic and Pastoral Week.
In his opening remarks, His Lordship Michael Bibi, the Chief Shepherd of the Diocese, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the council members for their unwavering dedication to their pastoral ministries. He commended their sacrifices and efforts in ensuring the continuous propagation of the Gospel of Christ across the diocese.
The majority of the meeting was held behind closed doors, reflecting the council’s focus on confidential and strategic discussions concerning the management and governance of the diocese.
It is worth noting that the Presbyteral Council is a significant structure within the Church, as firmly recommended by the Code of Canon Law and the Decree on the Ministry and Life of Priests (*Presbyterorum Ordinis*). Canon 495 §1 mandates the establishment of a council of priests in every diocese. This council serves as the Bishop’s Senate, representing the presbyterium and assisting the Bishop in governing the diocese. Their collective role is to ensure that the pastoral welfare of the faithful entrusted to the Bishop is effectively promoted.
The economic and pastoral week will run till January 31st, 2025 bringing together different stakeholders of the Diocese, to plan for a fruitful 2025
