
Council members of the Education Council of Buea Diocese met on Thursday February 13, 2025 in the NECC conference Hall at the Bishop Pius Awa Memorial Pastoral Center to deliberate on ways to keep improving on the education sector of the Diocese, providing holistic training to the pupils and students entrusted to their care.

The meeting was chaired by the Bishop of Buea and proprietor of Catholic Schools in the Diocese His Lordship Michael Bibi, who at the beginning, rendered thanks to council members for their availability in sharing knowledge for the betterment of the training of students.

According to reports from the Catholic Education Secretary Rev. Fr. Vincent Messue, the schools in the Diocese experienced a relative increase in the enrolment of students this academic year 2024/2025. He also highlighted in his report that the two schools; Our Lady of Grace College Muyuka and our Lady of Mount Carmel College Muea, which were reopened after a period of shutdown due to the insecurity raised by the Anglophone crisis , are currently operating normally with a good number of students in attendance.

The council reflected on the facilities and infrastructures of the primary and secondary schools, paying attention to the quality of services that should be provided at each level. Members raised concern about the diocesan bakery which they noted need to improve on its services. The council also gave an open door for schools to improve on their uniforms as the need may be.
Other Issues discussed during the meeting included the need for timely financial reports and accountability by the principals of all the schools for adequate functioning of the system.
The team equally chatted ways to curb the abuse of drugs in schools and recommended for routine sensitization on the ills of illicit drug use in catholic schools. The Bishop informed council members that the Diocese has established a permanent office to cater for CNPS related issues of teachers and other workers of the Diocese. He also told them about the coming of SOBAN Catholic University Institute of Sasse in the days ahead.
At the close of the meeting, Bishop Michael Bibi reminded that whatever is done in the Catholic schools must be in accordance with the laws guiding the education sector in Cameroon . The Education Council it is worth noting is a body of experts appointed by the Bishop to play an advisory role in education matters of the Diocese.
The next council meeting is expected to take place on the 7th of August 2025.
