The rite of the administration of the sacrament of baptism was the focus of the catechetical session of Monday, July 29,2024, with His Lordship Michael Bibi held at St. Charles Lwanga Parish Molyko-Buea. During the teachings, the Christians were educated on the elements that constitute the rite of baptism, the pre-baptismal ceremonies, and the post-baptismal ceremonies.
The prelate highlighted the elements of baptism including the naming of the child, signing of the cross on the forehead of the , intercession, anointing of the child, blessing of water that is used for baptism, renunciation of sin, and the profession of faith in the Trinity.
While teaching, he reiterated that baptism is valid only when the proper matter and form are used. The proper matter he noted is water, while the proper form is the Trinitarian formula where the person is baptized in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. He also said that in the administration of the sacrament of baptism by pouring, for example, the water must be poured three times in accordance with the name of the Trinity.
The post baptismal ceremonies were highlighted as including Chrism, clothing the baptized with a white garment, lighting and handing of candles to parents and God parents, among others.
Furthermore, it was reiterated that during baptism, a sponsor must be present or a witness who can attest that the sacrament was administered .
The prelate further told Christians that after baptism, the register and the baptismal card must be filled by the minister following the required procedure. After baptism, It is also required that Information on any other sacraments administered, be sent to the parish/church where baptism took place for proper records to be made.
