Members of the Education Council of the Diocese of Buea, convened for the second time in the academic year 2023/2024, to evaluate the operation of diocesan schools during the first segment of the academic year, and to take decisions for the smooth running of the rest of the school year.
Holding this 31st day of January 2024 at the Bishop’s conference hall in small Soppo, Buea, chaired by Bishop Michael Bibi; Bishop of Buea and Proprietor of all catholic schools, council members brainstormed on the effectiveness of schools especially in the crisis most hit zones under the Muyuka Deanery where schools are reported to have resumed in most of the areas though timidly due to fear of the unknown.
Another concern raised is the enrolment in schools which has been affected by the ongoing crisis in the Northwest and Southwest Regions of the country. Some children especially those in remote areas, it was noted, have not been able to resume school due to lack of finances. However, the Diocese has been able to offer scholarships to most of these children so that the future of their educational career is not meddled with.
Despite the challenges faced, Bishop Michael Bibi stated that the church will continue to encourage the education of children for this he says remains an inalienable right of the children. The education council equipped with education experts, have a mission to guide the schools in the diocese of Buea in the fulfillment of their mission in building a community of faith-based students with the right knowledge and skills for a rapidly changing world.
Present at this meeting was the education secretary Rev. Fr Vincent Mesue, and the Vice Mr. Vefonge James Ndumbe, the former President of the Catholic University Institute of Buea and academic Don Prof. Victor Julius Ngoh, Mr. Takwi Mathew of the Cameroon GCE Board, amongst other experts in the field .
