24 years after of the institution of the Provincial Pastoral Plan which calls for the establishment of a pastoral council at the level of each Diocese in the Bamenda Ecclesiastical Province of Cameroon, the Diocese of Buea has on this 4th day of November 2023 realized the goal of having in place the pioneer Pastoral Council for the Diocese.
Mr. Vefonge James Ndumbe; a charismatic Christian and one who has served the church over the years in different capacities, won the confidence of members of the Electoral College and was elected pioneer president of the Buea Diocesan Pastoral Council with a land slide victory of 18 votes out of 24.
Chairing this first ever diocesan pastoral council was the Chief Shepherd Michael Bibi, Bishop of the Diocese of Buea who took time to explain to members the responsibilities of the Council while congratulating the maiden executives for accepting to serve the church in such capacity. He told these members that “ the responsibility of the pastoral council is to work in close collaboration with the Bishop, the Deans, parishes, commissions , prayer and action groups, to implement the provincial pastoral plan which is the one document that presents the pastoral vision of the Bamenda Ecclesiastical Province and which guides the work of evangelization in the Province. It is incumbent for you to understand the provincial pastoral plan and make it a reality at the level of all parishes in the Diocese of Buea”.
The prelate called on the constituted authorities and other council members to work in synodality and to use their gifts and talents to actively participate in working for the growth of the Diocese Addressing for the first time these council members, President James Vefonge while thanking the Electoral College for the trust bestowed upon him, pledged a service of humility and to collectively move towards achieving the vision of the Bishop. He reiterated that his leadership style is that of “us” not “I” and invited all to work together as a team for the good of the church.
The president will be assisted by Mrs. Tangwa Veronica who was elected Vice President of the Council. The election was coordinated by the Diocesan Pastoral Office led by Rev. Fr. Theophille
