Members of the Finance Council of the Diocese of Buea have been informed of an increase in investment in the Diocese including a rise in fixed Assets of the Diocese amounting to the sum of two billion, thirty four million francs CFA within the period 2022 – 2023. This record was presented by the finance Office during the first Finance Council for the 2024 financial year which held at the Bishop’s Conference Hall in Small Soppo, Buea this 25th day of January 2024.
The increase in fixed assets is visible in projects including; the improvement of the education sector by establishing structures in schools, the construction of the Mount Mary Hospital Mortuary, the opening of Regina Pacis Micro Finance, and the purchase of vehicles to facilitate transportation just to mention these.
Presenting the financial budget for 2024, the finance office noted an anticipated income of two hundred and sixty million, two hundred and fifty thousand francs and an expense of two hundred and thirty one million, six hundred thousand francs.
Chairing the meeting, His Lordship Michael Bibi, Bishop of Buea while welcoming members to this first session of the year 2024, reminded them of the responsibilities of the Finance council according to Can. 492 and 493 of the Code of canon Law which clearly states that; In every diocese, a Finance Council is to be established, over which the diocesan bishop himself or his delegate presides and which consists of at least three members of the Christian faithful truly expert in Financial affairs and civil law, outstanding in integrity, and appointed by the bishop. Members of the Finance council are to be appointed for Five years, but at the end of this period they can be appointed for other Five year terms as the need may be. He further noted that Persons who are related to the bishop up to the fourth degree of consanguinity or affinity are excluded from the Finance Council.
According to Can. 493, in addition to the functions entrusted to it in Book V, The Temporal Goods of the Church, the Finance council prepares each year, according to the directions of the diocesan bishop, a budget of the income and expenditures which are foreseen for the entire governance of the diocese in the coming year and at the end of the year examines an account of the revenues and expenses.
The finance council of the Diocese of Buea it is worth noting, meets twice every financial year , for the first time, to plan the budget for the year and after six months, it convenes for the second time to assess the implementation of the approved budget.
This year’s first Finance Council meeting, took place within the framework of the Buea Diocesan Pastoral Week which ends on Saturday the 27th of January 2024.
