On Monday, June 2nd, Bishop Michael Bibi of Buea delivered an insightful doctrinal teaching centered on the vital belief that the Church is Apostolic. To say the Church is Apostolic means that it is founded on the teachings and authority of the apostles, entrusted by Christ with the mission of spreading the Gospel to all nations. This doctrine emphasizes the Church’s role in preserving and guarding the deposit of faith—handing down the entirety of faith without distortion. Drawing inspiration from the Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraph 857, the Bishop highlighted that the Church is Apostolic because it is founded on the apostles in 3 ways:
First, the Church is built upon the foundation of the apostles, who were chosen and sent by Christ. This means that the teachings and authority of the apostles are central to the life and mission of the Church, ensuring continuity with the original message of Jesus.
Secondly, the Church is guided by the Holy Spirit, which enables it to remain in fidelity to the apostolic teachings. This involves handing down the faith without distortion, maintaining a connection to the original message given by Christ.
Thirdly, that the Church continues to be taught, sanctified and guided by the apostles till Christ returns through their successors in pastoral office; who are the Bishops ,assisted by the priests in union with the successor of Peter. The assurance that Jesus promises to be with the Church until the end of time underscores this mission.

During the catechetical session, Bishop Bibi reminded the faithful that the Church is entrusted with the missionary mandate to continue proclaiming the Good News. This fundamental doctrine serves as a reminder that the leadership of our Church is firmly rooted in the apostles, and as such, we are called to remain faithful to their teachings and their mission to spread the Gospel.
He further highlighted how the Church serves as both a mother and a protective umbrella for all Christians, nurturing their faith and guiding their spiritual journeys.
The teachings also included a question-and-answer session, providing an opportunity for members of the congregation to engage directly with the Bishop, deepening their understanding of the Church’s apostolic mission and its implications for their lives. This exchange not only fostered a sense of community but also encouraged active participation in living out the faith in tangible ways.
