On Monday, December 8, 2025, the Most Reverend Bishop Michael Bibi, Chief Shepherd of the Diocese of Buea, led a profound catechetical session on the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The televised event, held at St. John of God Parish, Bonadikombo, Mile 4, Limbe, drew faithful from across the diocese, all eager to deepen their understanding of this foundational Catholic doctrine.
Addressing the gathering, Bishop Bibi underscored the pivotal role of Mary in the story of salvation, emphasizing that just as sin entered the world through a human act, so too did redemption come through Christ, and Mary was the chosen vessel for this divine plan. He highlighted that Mary, conceived without the stain of original sin, was uniquely prepared to bear the Savior of humanity. Reflecting on paragraph 492 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), the prelate affirmed that Mary’s Immaculate Conception was not merely a privilege but a foundational element of her role in God’s plan of salvation.

Drawing inspiration from the Gospel of Luke (1:28), where the angel Gabriel addresses Mary as “full of grace” (Latin: gratia plena), Bishop Bibi reminded the faithful that Mary’s life exemplified the virtues of love, obedience, peace, and righteousness—virtues every Christian is called to emulate. “Mary’s ‘yes’ to God’s will,” he said, “teaches us the importance of surrender and trust in our own journey of faith.”
The Chief Shepherd also recalled that the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, celebrated annually on December 8, was formally defined as a dogma of the Church by Pope Pius IX on December 8, 1854, through the apostolic constitution Ineffabilis Deus. This declaration affirmed the Church’s belief in Mary’s preservation from original sin, a truth deeply rooted in Scripture and Tradition.
The catechesis concluded with a call to the faithful to seek Mary’s intercession, asking for her guidance in living lives marked by grace, humility, and unwavering devotion to God.
