FATHER MARTIN NJIE DRILLS CHRISTIANS ON THE SOCIAL WELFARE COMMISSION.

Date: September 15, 2025

Driven by a commitment to service and faith, the Diocese of Buea continues to prioritize community transformation through catechesis. On Monday, September 15th, 2025, Father Martin Njie, Cathedral Administrator of Regina Pacis Cathedral, led a catechetical session at the Regina Pacis cathedral in Small Soppo. The session focused on the Social Welfare Commission, a vital arm of the Bamenda Provincial Pastoral Plan, highlighting its crucial role in nurturing Christian responsibility, promoting compassion, and strengthening the Church’s mission of service, witness, and evangelization through charity.

The Cathedral Administrator further defined Social welfare commision as the body regulating the organized efforts and programs of the church aimed at ensuring the well-being of individuals and communities, especially the vulnerable, by meeting their basic needs such as food, shelter, healthcare, education, and protection.

In the Diocese of Buea, the Social Welfare Commission operates primarily through Caritas and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul as key institutions entrusted with expressing the Church’s faith through concrete acts of charity. These bodies serve as vital channels through which the Church reaches out to the needy, the vulnerable, and the marginalized, embodying the Gospel call to serve others.

CHRISTIAN LISTENING TO FATHER NJIE

Father Martin Njie acknowledged the numerous challenges faced by these institutions, including the ongoing sociopolitical crisis in the region, cases of misappropriation of funds and donations, and a general lack of enthusiasm from some members. Despite these setbacks, he urged the faithful not to grow weary in doing good, but to remain committed to giving, participating, and responding actively when called upon by the commission.

The Social Welfare Commission is composed of a diverse group of members, including priests, religious, community leaders, and lay Christians who are inspired to serve and possess a sound understanding of social welfare. Father Martin emphasized that while not all Christians may be direct members of institutions like Caritas or the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, their consistent support through donations and charitable acts remains invaluable and cannot be overlooked. Their generosity plays a crucial role in sustaining the Church’s mission of compassion and outreach.

The Social Welfare Commission remains a vital expression of the Church’s mission of love and service. Through collective effort, generosity, and commitment, every Christian whether directly involved or not can play a part in building a more compassionate and supportive community.
