CHRIST’S HEALING MANDATE, THE ROLE OF THE HEALTH APOSTOLATE COMMISSION.

Date: October 14, 2025

Our reaction to sickness speaks volumes about our faith and understanding of human frailty. Sickness reveals our vulnerabilities and reminds us that we do not have absolute control over our lives. It calls for humility, trust in God, and a positive outlook. This message was echoed by Bishop Michael Bibi on Monday, October 13, 2025, during a catechetical session at Regina Pacis Cathedral, Small Soppo, Buea. His teaching focused on the Health Apostolate Commission, an essential arm of the Bamenda Provincial Pastoral Plan, emphasizing the Church’s mission to care for the sick both spiritually and physically.

Jesus, throughout the Gospels, healed those afflicted with various illnesses—lunatics, paralytics, lepers, demonstrating His divine compassion and power. He stands as the perfect model for the healing ministry. Quoting from the book of Matthew 10:1, “Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness,” the chief shepherd reiterated he churches mandate, in Christ’s healing mission through the Health Apostolate.

During his teaching, he noted that, this commission is entrusted with promoting a holistic and Catholic approach to healing spiritually, emotionally, and physically. It seeks to identify and care for the sick and vulnerable, and ensure those in need receive the Sacrament of the Sick, embodying Christ’s healing presence in today’s world and to encourage local communities to be self reliant.

The prelate highlighted that, members of the Health Apostolate Commission include priests, health workers, catechists, and devoted Christians with experience or expertise in healthcare—united by a shared commitment to serve the sick and uphold the healing mission of the Church.

The Health Apostolate Commission serves as an important expression of Christ’s healing ministry, reminding us that caring for the sick is both a spiritual and communal responsibility. Through this mission, the Church continues to bring hope, comfort, and compassion to those in need.
