
The 51st Ordinary Plenary Assembly of the National Episcopal Conference of Cameroon (NECC) officially opened today, Monday, 1 June 2026, at the headquarters of the National Episcopal Conference in Mvolyé, Yaoundé.
The opening day began with a Holy Mass celebrated by His Lordship Bishop Justin Georges Ebengue, Bishop of the Diocese of Yokadouma, invoking God’s guidance and wisdom upon the bishops as they begin five days of prayer, reflection, and deliberation on matters concerning the Church in Cameroon.

Following the Eucharistic celebration and opening formalities, the bishops proceeded with the presentation of the programme of the Plenary Assembly and commenced work within the various Episcopal Commissions of the Conference. The commissions include Economic Affairs, Doctrine of the Faith, Lay Apostolate, Liturgy, Caritas, Clergy and Seminaries, Justice and Peace, Health, Social Communication, Consecrated Life, Legal Affairs, Evangelization, Ecumenism and Interreligious Dialogue, and Catholic Education.

The commissions are expected to hold working sessions throughout the day, with their respective reports to be presented during subsequent sessions of the Assembly.
The annual gathering provides an important opportunity for the bishops of Cameroon to evaluate the life and mission of the Church, strengthen collaboration among dioceses, and discern pastoral priorities for the faithful across the country.
The Diocese of Buea invites all the faithful to keep the bishops in prayer throughout the Assembly, that the Holy Spirit may guide their deliberations and decisions for the good of the Church and the nation.
