Faithful have been drilled on the responsibilities of children towards their parents and that of parents towards the children as instructed by the fourth commandment which calls for honor to fathers and mothers. This teaching was carried out by the Chief Catechist of Buea His Lordship Michael Bibi during the catechetical session of Monday Dec. 9, 2024 which focused on the 4th commandment of the Church.

According to the prelate, children whether young or old, must respect their parents in word and action, doing what is right only. The way children speak to their parents must be respectful and they must also act towards their parents in humility and gratitude for all the sacrifices made by the parents who he mentioned, must not only be their biological parents, but anyone who supports them in their growth. The prelate also emphasized that respect towards parents should be seen in the care children accord to them when they are sick, old and helpless. Nevertheless, children have the responsibility to say no to their parents when asked to do things which are wrong but they must do so in love and humility .

While the children are bound to respect their parents, the Local Ordinary equally highlighted that parents also have a duty to train these children by providing them with the necessary education, moral and spiritual upbringing and providing for the needs of the children that will help them grow responsibly. He also cautioned parents to avoid pushing their children to do evil by making requests which are beyond their capacity to handle.

In conclusion, the prelate noted that parents should be of good example to their children and that they are responsible in bringing the Gospel to the children for the family he reminded is the first place for the education of the child.
